Zushi Sushi & Teppanyaki Restaurant

With my dad visiting from the UK I wanted to take him somewhere a little special, that had bags of character and would show off the Gold Coast at its best.
Having visited
The Beach Café a number of times I had seen the Sushi and Teppanyaki Restaurant next door and was keen to try it. It is located in Surfers Paradise, in the excellent Soul Complex directly opposite the beach on The Esplanade.
I have never had Teppanyaki before so I wasn't sure what to expect. The basic idea is you choose from the menu a dish ranging from $30 to $50 which is the meat (chicken, steak etc) and sauce style, included in the price you get soup to start then salad, the main dish with fresh vegetables, plus rice. Not bad at all for the money, and the portion sizes are very generous. It is fully licenced, and drinks are reasonably priced too.
We sat at the main cooking tables to be right in the action and what I loved most was seeing the food prepared right in front of you - just being able to see how fresh the fresh meat and vegetables were was great. It is quite a wonderful experience seeing your food cooked to perfection right before your eyes and the spectacle and smell of the steam, spices and the heat certainly ticked the special box.
The chefs cooking in front of you are exceptionally friendly and were happy to answer the many questions and teasing from my dad with great humour. They also on occasion will do the flips and tricks with the spatulas and shakers - think a Japanese version of Tom Cruise in cocktail - an awesome sight that again adds to the spectacle.
For Sushi lovers there is a large Sushi Train Table, plus there is loads of outdoor seating for those that want to soak up the Beach views. They have an everyday offer too, which is half-price lunch from 11am till 4pm – that's a pretty long lunch offer.
A really enjoyable night – which my dad said was one of his favourites in his time in Australia, so mission accomplished.
The Soul Complex is a great addition to Surfers Paradise with excellent bars and restaurants opening up all the time. I love this part of Surfers as it is slightly away from the noise and main strip, offering locals and visitors an alternative place to hang out.
