A few years ago after I finished working full time, I got back into bushwalking and kayaking. I also joined a line dancing class. I wrote about line dancing here .

I still go to line dancing and really enjoy it. It is a great social activity too.

A few months ago, a friend invited me to go to Zumba. I wasn't sure what to expect because I imagined it would be very fast, energetic with complicated steps. I had seen video clips on Youtube of very fit, young, gorgeous people doing Zumba and thought I'd never be able to do it.

I went along to try it out and really loved it and have been going as often as I can ever since.

The class I go to is run by Ama Kainano at the Hills District Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade, Keperra. It is a Zumba Gold class aimed at an older age group on Thursday mornings at 9.30am. Ama also runs classes on other days and runs one at the Keperra Sanctuary Retirement Village on Samford Road. She also has weight training and personal training sessions at her Fitness Studio at Ferny Way, Ferny Hills. You can find more information about her classes on her Facebook page here .

Ama is very fit and is a great teacher. She makes her classes a lot of fun. She has been an accredited teacher since 2010. She says every class feels like a party. She told me Zumba is for everyone. Her oldest participant was 89 years old. It's obvious she loves teaching Zumba and makes sure everyone has a great time. A few times I have been, Cindy has been up on the stage helping out. She is young and very energetic.

According to Ama Zumba is "A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class".

Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Pérez created Zumba during the 1990s. A Zumba class combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body using principles from aerobic and fitness to achieve cardio and muscle-toning benefits.

I really like Zumba because the music is great and it gives your body a great workout using all your muscle groups. Everyone dances around and looks like they love all the movement. One of the women in our group, in her 70s, told me she didn't do any exercise at all until a few years ago. Now she does Zumba and weight training classes and feels much fitter and healthier. She says Zumba is great for strength and balance.

Zumba has become very popular around the world. My friend who goes on cruises says they have Zumba classes every day on the cruise ship.

There are Zumba classes all over Brisbane, which you can find online. You should be able to find one near where you live if you are interested in trying it out. I am sure you will enjoy it and get fit without even trying. We usually go for coffee after our class, so it is a wonderful social activity. Classes cost $10-$12 each.
