This picture book would be just the thing to read at Christmas to a child who is interested in aliens or outer space. The lovable young dog Zoomer and his two older brothers are watching for Santa's reindeer when they see something else unexpected instead. A spaceship full of friendly aliens crash lands in their backyard. The aliens play for a while but then want to get home in time for Christmas morning. When they discover that their spaceship's landing gear has been damaged Zoomer selflessly gives up his beloved tricycle to help fix it. The aliens thank them and leave a special present for the dog family- a glowing star to go on their Christmas tree. On Christmas morning Zoomer receives a brand new bicycle from Santa who was impressed with his generosity.
The kids and I enjoyed the cheery, colourful illustrations, especially the "yarple-headed gigantazillar" and the forcefield swimming pool, which both had a bit of a Dr. Seuss vibe.
The book is a little different from your run of the mill Christmas stories, which is refreshing. The story is quite sweet, with Zoomer setting a lovely example by giving up something of his own without even being asked. It could be used as a starting to point to talk to children about the joy of giving, which is a good topic for this time of year.
If you enjoy this book you might like Zoomer's other adventures, Zoomer and Zoomer's Summer Snowstorm.
