Zookeeper Battle – App Review

The original Zookeeper app was just like any other match 3 game. Match 3 of the same symbol, clear enough symbols under a set time limit and the stage is cleared. Level up and repeat. The story of this take on it was you were a zookeeper needing to catch all the animals that escaped from the zoo.

Zookeeper Battle takes the same idea but has added a much needed dose of healthy competition. The premise is still matching 3 animals, however this time you battle other players/zookeepers. It's a test of skill, luck and speed. Each player chooses an avatar out of eight animals. Both players start with the same board and their avatars have energy bars. The animals in the puzzle are designated as attack or defence. Clear the animals to get attack and defence points, at the end of the 30 second round these scores are compared. The special panel flashes each animal across it, it clears all the animals that match the one you hit on it.

One of the guilty pleasures of this game is the super cute avatars slugging it out. Attack points decrease your opponent's energy bar while defence points block attacks. Higher attack points intensify the fight. The avatars' moods change depending on their energy levels. The battle ends with one empty energy bar or the fifth round ends, the winner whoever has the most energy.

Tapping special (item) panels allow you to booby trap your opponent in the next round. The boss ensures they waste time clearing boss blocks scattered on their board. The bucket makes their board muddy, increasing the difficulty level. The binoculars makes potential matches pop out, while the heart replenishes your energy.

There is a level system where progression is based on points from certain milestones. There are rewards including backgrounds, decorative items to place in the background or greetings to be used for battles. Everyone has the opportunity to earn these rewards, so it's the limited edition prizes that scream hard core gamer.

Previously the group battle challenge and weekly challenge was the only method to get special prizes. Thankfully the developers have now introduced a monthly login stamp that rewards players with decorative prizes, power bottles or the items. With the introduction of the zoo points, an accumulation of points from participating in battles there is now even more chances to get prizes. Bonus boss events where you battle a boss now gives you gives zoo points depending on the level of the boss. The treasure capsule gives you a prize in exchange for a token from zoo points or 5 power bottles. The prizes constantly change and now enable more personalisation of your avatar.

Another unique feature is the game limits how many battles you can play at a time. You start off with a CP bar of 6. Each CP is a token for one battle. Afterwards there's a 6 minute waiting time for each CP to replenish, however the game only ever replenishes 2 bars. The remaining 4 bars are only replenished with a CP bottle.

**Tips:

Turn on your music function, open app and turn off in app music to battle to the tune of your own playlist.

It's easier for Android users to play with the same account on different devices, just remember your password.

If in doubt, move your finger in random vertical and horizontal motions across the board to make matches that you've overlooked.

Boost your defence score by getting a defence animal on the special panel.

Get points for both attack and defence when you clear the round's lucky animal**

Zookeeper battle: A fun, innovative choice for anyone looking for just a bit more than classic match 3 games.
