It's undeniable – the dead have risen and are beginning to walk the streets of Melbourne. Well at least people who look like they're dead.

Zombie culture has well and truly reached our shores. Television shows like The Walking Dead and the fact we now have access to thousands of self-published zombie authors on devices (my personal favourite is Mark Tufo, check him out), has turned Melbourne zombie crazy.

Now if that plague does eventually make its way to Australia, or some nuclear testing does go wrong, or even if aliens start nesting in our brains turning us into mindless pod people who eat each other, you will need to be prepared – and Melbourne is a great place to do it!

Humans vs Zombies
Humans vs Zombies (HvsZ) ran its first event in 2009 and continues to grow in popularity. It's a game of tag, but instead of between a group of primary schoolers, it's between humans (who wear bandanas on their heads) and zombies (who wear bandanas on their ankles). Humans can be "infected" by a zombie when their bandana is stolen and held for three seconds by a zombie. There is a whole list of weapons humans can use to defend themselves, from balled up socks to toy foam blasters, which paralyse zombies for 20 seconds. Although this is a lot of fun, it's in no way proper preparation for the apocalypse – you definitely will want to use more than socks then!

The Melbourne Zombie Shuffle **
A good way to prepare for the zombie apocalypse is to familiarise yourself with what the end of the world is going to look like. The best way to do that is either participate in, or at least go and watch, the annual Melbourne Zombie Shuffle. The Shuffle is when thousands of zombie enthusiasts dress up like undead and walk the streets of Melbourne City. As many of the participants put a lot of effort into their costume, it's a very entertaining sight and a lot of fun.

Patient Zero **
Now this is for those who want to really prepare themselves for when the cemeteries start to stir. It's Melbourne's first fully immersive, live action, real life, multiplayer, laser shooting, role playing game. With guns that weigh about 4kgs, full protective armour and a sergeant that screams at you about the dangers lurking in the abandoned hospital – this is as real as it's going to get – for now. As soon as players book a ticket, the game begins. The creators of this unique game have created a world designed so perfectly, that you may find yourself questioning if perhaps it's not just "zombie preparation" anymore.

So there you have it – three top ways to prepare for the end. Good luck fellow human – and hopefully I see you on the other side.
