Getting lost is the easiest way to have fun!

Panoramas, Bushwalks and Epic driving
Zig Zag Scenic Drive is a narrow, twisting road down the side of the Darling Ranges in Gooseberry Hill. Originally made as part of the Upper Darling Range Railway, the hair raising one way road is now widely regarded as one of the most picturesque locations in Western Australia.

Driving
As mentioned in a previous review, Zig Zag Scenic Drive is one of Perth's best driving roads. The steep three kilometre descent features many switchbacks and constantly changing surrounds. One second you're sandwiched between rock faces or trees then all of a sudden the sides open out with steep falls centimetres from the roadside. It definitely keeps you interested.

Unfortunately thanks to the nature of the road (hairpin turns, low traffic, far away from police) degenerates in cars do occasionally ruin the serenity with their primitive mating calls - i.e. tyre screeching and loud mufflers. As usual anyone who witnesses this behaviour is encouraged to take down the number plate and notify police.

Photography
Zig Zag Scenic Drive is a photographer's dream destination. Its high vantage point gives you views as far West, North and South as the eye can see. Thanks to Perth's flat terrain the CBD juts out clearly right in the centre of the frame.

The daytime shots are great, but the sunset shots are even better. When a storm's brewing the great sunset shots become impossibly incredible... and that is putting it lightly. Just check out this image taken by one of my mates after a big storm a few years back.

Walking Trails
The bush walks around Gooseberry Hill are very serene. It doesn't take long to get away from the noise of suburbia and find yourself lost in a world that industry can't yet reach.

The dense bushland and undulating terrain give way only to dramatic rocky outcrops and winding creek beds. Cliffs and hills rise around you as you venture deeper into the ranges.

In the winter the scorched creek beds finally have their thirst quenched as they spring to life, the water creating an idyllic background noise for this beautiful, untouched landscape.

There are plenty of spots to park along Zig Zag Scenic Drive and the distance of the walking trails are limited only by how far you dare adventure.

Statham's Quarry
For those into rock climbing Statham's Quarry is a must. The abandoned stone quarry has been converted into an epic outdoor climbing and abseiling facility managed by the DEC.

There's plenty of space for everyone and the Quarry features everything from easy inclines to challenging overhangs. There is a walking trail around the top of the Quarry which can be a little intimidating for some.

There is no fence separating the trail from the steep, high rock face. It is advised to not stand too close to the edge as loose rock may give way, and dying tends to not be fun.

Fun Fact: the rocks for the City Beach Groyne came from this Quarry.

Zig Zag Scenic Drive is a perfect example of what makes Perth great. The fact that we have places like this right on our doorstep is proof that Perth is far from the "dullsville" that so many locals claim.

Note: The road is closed to traffic twice each year for the Targa West Rally and the Zig Zag Walk in October

That's a beautiful view of the quarry.

Every city in the world has nature around (and in) them, and a lot of it is a good deal wilder than our little old hills.
