Ziburu Restaurant, Seminyak

We are spoiled for choice in Seminyak when it comes to restaurants. Although I'm a huge fan of the fresh and plentiful Indonesian street food, I do like to mix things up occasionally and try a high-end establishment. There's no shortage of opportunities offering dishes from many other cultures. Also, good wine, which is not so plentiful in Bali.
I recently visited Ziburu, a family-run restaurant offering authentic Italian food on Seminyak's coolest street; Drupadi.
The setting is inviting. An alfresco space with fairy lights in the trees welcomes diners or those who choose to drop in for a glass of wine at the bar. There’s quality in the detail here including hand-crafted cutlery rests and crockery stamped with the Ziburu name.
After taking our seats in the timber moulded (surprisingly comfortable) timber chairs we chose a bottle of Montepulciano wine. Our server didn’t mind that we asked for an ice bucket. Red wine needs a slight chill to it in order to be enjoyed in the tropics. We chose three dishes from the menu and were then surprised with a complementary starter comprising various breads, pestos and a small but delicious offering of pumpkin soup. It was a very good start.
We had heard that servings at Ziburu are very generous and so, with this in mind, we ordered two small serves, and one large, to share between two. I’m so glad I chose a variation of the classic ‘Vitello Tonato’. The dish comprised delicate slices of beef tenderloin, rather than veal, with capers, lemon gel, croutons and a creamy tuna sauce. It was sublime. The Paranza seafood dish was also fresh and delicious.
Our single large plate stole the show as far as the presentation was concerned. The large squid stuffed with ink risotto and adorned with sun-dried tomato pesto and green pea purée was a symphony in design and colour. Needless to say, it tasted divine also. We had cancelled a side of broccolini after our first course in fear that we may not be able to fit it into our almost fulfilled appetites. Turns out it was a wise move.
Sadly we had no room for dessert either, although we managed to enjoy the tiny sweet treats presented with our bill.
Ziburu is open daily for lunch and dinner and hosts an ‘all you can eat brunch’ on the first Sunday of each month.
