As our kids have grown older, we have tried to establish a regular 'family night out'. The kids are still pretty young (both under 5) so our restaurant of choice needs to have:

1. Family-friendly seating – so the kids can move around without annoying other patrons
2. Value-for-money food and drink options for the whole family
3. A play area for the kids to let off some steam

We tried Zest Café at the Raiders Club, Gungahlin and have never looked back. Zest ticks all the above boxes. Plus they have a $12 Chicken Schnitzel special every Wednesday night (5.30-9pm), so we head there after the kid's swimming lessons at the Gungahlin leisure centre for an easy dinner.

The restaurant is what you'd expect from a modern club – clean, no-fuss contemporary décor with a simple system of queueing to order. On average, meals arrive within 10 minutes (just enough time to order a drink), which is perfect for hungry little tummies. There is an abundance of staff to bring out meals and clear tables, so tables are turned quickly.

We usually opt for the $12 Special – chicken schnitzel with chips and veg or salad if we go on a Wednesday night. I also enjoy the Caesar salad with Salt and Pepper Squid, and there are plenty of other options on the menu such as:
1. Grilled classics such as steak, chicken breast and salmon
2. Classics such as fish and chips, burgers, and bangers and mash
3. Pasta
4. Kids meals including bangers and mash, battered fish, chicken tenders, cheesy pasta and ravioli
5. There are also $10 Senior Meals available too

The car park fills up on a Wednesday night, so arrive before 7pm or be prepared to find parking on the street if you come later.

Meat Raffles also take place from 7.30pm every Wednesday and Friday night. Entry only costs $1 per ticket, and listening out for your 'special numbers' is a great way to entertain the kids.

There is also a fantastic kid's indoor playroom. The play equipment consists of a fun structure that kids can climb, as well as a slide and tunnels to hide in. Whilst my two-year-old can't climb to the top yet (not a bad thing!), he still enjoys playing hide-and-seek in the tunnels.

Lunch specials from $11 are also available between 12-2pm seven days a week.

Annual membership to Canberra's three Raiders Clubs costs $2 and one member can sign in multiple guests.
