There's nothing worse than sitting in an overcrowded cafe with tables too close together, chatter and noise bouncing off the walls, and very average food. It just makes your head want to explode! Luckily, Zest Bistro on Racecourse Road was none of that. In fact, it was quiet, breezy, and very pleasant.

It has been a while since I've been to Racecourse Road and I decided to check it out one Friday morning. As I drove along Racecourse Road, I saw heaps of alfresco cafes, elegant boutiques and lots of other businesses on either side of the road. This was not the Racecourse Road I remember!

After parking the car a few streets away I set out to search for a nice, peaceful cafe to begin my morning. I came across Zest Bistro, located next to Coles, and liked what I saw. So I plonked down at one of the tables and waited. What attracted me to this place was its alfresco dining area and the incredibly friendly vibe. I also saw a few individuals enjoying a cuppa with their morning paper.

The outdoor dining area is an enclosed area with shelves of potted fresh herbs between the posts. There is one continuous booth around the perimeter of the area with cool green seating cushions. Tables are reasonably well spaced so it doesn't seem like you're part of the next table's conversation. The cushions probably need a good wash, but other than that, I could stay here the whole morning if I wanted to.

A waitress promptly appeared with a welcoming smile and water. She took my coffee order and left me to study the menu.

The menu consists of various items to suit all kinds of breakfast eaters. For the light eater there's sourdough or fruit toast with your choice of jam; coconut crumpets; and avocado on toast. If you're looking for something non-oily, there are also fruit and muesli options. A few mouth-watering dishes featuring eggs such as Zest benedict and omelette with ham and aged cheddar are also on offer. And those with a sweet tooth will be happy with Nutella and peanut butter French toast or sweet corncakes.

Out of all the options I found the one pot breakfast the most tempting and the nasi goreng the most unusual. After all, not many people I know would eat fried rice for breakfast. You can also choose from a good range of sides to add to your meal including potato rosti, tomato relish, and haloumi.

Being a huge mushroom fan, I opted for the mushrooms on toast. My coffee didn't take long and neither did my meal. I was pleasantly surprised with my breakfast as it looked superb. All the ingredients went perfectly. The colour and flavour combinations were pretty impressive. I was in heaven as I took mouthfuls after mouthfuls of toast, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach and goats cheese.

My coffee was quite average and I didn't end up finishing it. I did wish that I had taken some time in making my choice as soon as I saw their wide array of cold drinks. These included freshly squeezed juices, frappes, fruit smoothies and milkshakes. The Zest specialty drinks looked super enticing. Nevertheless, this is just one more reason to come back.

I sat here for a while after finishing my scrumptious breakfast enjoying my breezy Friday morning. My first Zest experience was pretty awesome and let me assure you, I'll be back soon.
