This week I caught The Zawinul Legacy Band defeathering 'Bird's Basement' in Singers Lane Melbourne. They play two shows a night until 16 October, so be quick and book your tickets here .

Hailing from sunny California, these four are no alley cats, they are handpicked professionals by Joe Zawinul's son Tony to recreate and reinvent the Zawinul Legacy with a 'no excuses' attitude. There are no introductions, they just get on stage belt our hard core melodic fusion, strong riffs, Saharan themes, smooth transitions, wild drums, manic boards - there is no time for sweet talk. These guys mean business.

Katisse Buckingham exquisite flute solo was my favourite performance of the night, not to mention his multiple talents on saxophone, clarinet and percussion. Kirk Covington smashed out amazing beats for a straight 45 minutes whilst Scott Kinsey kept the keyboard smoking and Hadrien Feraud held his own on bass. This band are magnificent musicians and they played straight through their set list with no breaks.

Bird's Basement runs two sessions nightly, so you can see The Zawinul Legacy twice for the one ticket price. Doors open at 6.00 pm for the Dinner session and the band starts at 7.30 pm until 9:00 pm. A Supper session starts at 10.00 pm (doors open 9:30 pm) and ends around 11:30 pm. If you attend the Dinner session you can stay for the Supper session for free.

You can order dinner and drinks from the reasonably priced menu and the service is quick and the food is good - predominantly Italian. If you don't want dinner there is a great cocktail bar and snacks too. But a word of warning - once the band starts there is no room for conversation. The Zawinul Legacy were really loud, so even if you tried to talk - no one would be able to hear you. Best to get there early when doors open, catch up with friends and eat during the show.

Bird's Basement is great for after work drinks and functions, with its black industrial style corrugated walls defined by blue fluorescent lighting. It's in a great location too - straight across from Flagstaff Station and gardens, and accessible via Tram 55 along William Street. The Singers Lane entry is from La Trobe street just behind 'Calzone'.

Why not treat your crew to a jazz night at Bird's Basement for Christmas or New Year?
