Staying at the Movenpick Hotel Petra in Jordan, just across the street from the Petra Archeological Site, you'll want to make the time to stop at both their spa and swimming pool. Located on the Basement Level, the bottom stop on the elevator, you'll glide along two long hallways to reach the spa desk. Here's what you'll want to know before you go.

Open from 10 am to 8 pm, many guests attempt to arrange their spa treatments upon their return from Petra. If you think there's any chance you may be done with your day early, schedule an appointment before you go. Otherwise, they're likely to be fully booked.

It's up another staircase to the beautiful pool deck complete with a single-level pool, depth 155 cm (61 inches or 5 feet 1 inch), and chilled to a breezy 21C or 70F. With lounge chairs for lazing or sunbathing, each lounge has an umbrella that can protect you from Petra's sunny days.

For fun, or to read a good book, curl up on one of the swinging chairs.

And for photos, take a few steps up the lifeguard's chair for an excellent view.

In the area closest to the hotel, you'll find tables and chairs if you'd like to have a picnic or order from the bar. You can also request lounge chair service… I saw several people ordering drinks multiple times.

During my visit, I rolled my ankle on my return trip to the Siq for our Daytime visit. So my lengthy visit was therapeutic. When I discovered how cold the water was, I used that, instead of hard to come by ice, to reduce the inflammation in my injured ankle. It worked like a charm.

After several hours of rest, I proceeded to the spa for an "Oriental" massage, their version of deep tissue. You'll complete the questionnaire, pointing out the areas you'd like special attention to, and meet your therapist. They also have Swedish massage and more.

My masseur, Mousa, did not speak much English beyond checking for pressure requirements during the massage.

If, like me, you come here with a lovely, but non-English-speaking staff, it may help you to know that there are four lockers in the lady's lounge. Check on the right-hand wall, choose one that has a key in the lock, and you'll find the robe, towel, and slippers you're likely accustomed to.

The shower already has all the amenities you'll need including shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, and lotion. The hook for your robe and towel inside the shower and the waterfall showerhead doesn't dampen these.

You needn't arrive until just the time of your appointment, but I do like to arrive early to confirm the paperwork doesn't interfere with my treatment time.

Once the paperwork was complete, I was led by Mousa back to a cave-like massage suite just beyond the women's locker room. Its mosaic tiles are eye-catching. But don't wait to get on the table…

They use a thin, shroud-like fabric, to cover you here so don't be surprised. Rolled up towels on either end of the stone and heated table, make it difficult to choose which way to orient yourself. I chose to head towards the alcove and missed having a face cradle. At the end of my treatment, Mousa did have me flip to the other side so he could massage my temples. He did a great job with scalp massage and firm pressure throughout.

With all the walking you'll do in Jordan, exploring archeological sites and meeting new people, you likely won't realize how much you need a massage until you get one.

As one of my writing colleagues said to me yesterday, "It changed my life."

While Visit Jordan hosted us for this trip, I paid for the massage and all opinions included herein are my own.
