Food that's fine and dandy
Zaaffran Restaurant in Darling Harbour combines the zest, passion, and spice of Indian food with the elegance and class of fine dining. Located on the 2nd floor of the Harbourside Shopping Centre, Zaaffran boasts harbour views that are as enjoyable as the food. While the restaurant is a little pricier than other Indian restaurants (hence the term 'fine dining'), the price is worth it for an enjoyable experience.

I feasted on an entrée of mushroom paneer cups, and a main course of subz biryani. The entrée was incredible. While Indian is one of my favourite cuisines, I'd never tried a mushroom cup before. Basically, the mushrooms are served like a tart, and stuffed with paneer (an Indian cheese). To say it was delicious would be an understatement. Unfortunately for me, the version I tried to recreate at home was nowhere near the same. The biryani was tasty, although the only downside was the incredibly large portion size. I was torn between not wanting to overeat, and not wanting to waste food. Because I ate too much, I didn't actually make it to dessert, which was quite a disappointment seeing as the dessert menu looked fabulous.

The prices vary per dish, and the specials are updated daily, however my advice would be to go in a group and choose one of the banquet menus. Starting at $47 per person (excluding drinks), they are a great way to sample items across the menu. If you choose to go à la carte, expect to pay at least $50 per person for a three course dinner.

My overall verdict? Zaaffran has amazing harbour views, beautiful interiors, great food and great ambiance. It is the perfect place for a romantic evening or a special occasion. On the other hand? I'd say its best avoided by students or anyone else on a budget. Bon appétit!
