Alliance française de Singapour and Voilah! French Festival Singapore jointly present the South East Asia travelling exhibition Yves Saint Laurent, Birth of a Legend, and Yves Saint Laurent, a 2014 French biographical drama film of the legendary fashion designer.


In Yves Saint Laurent (2014, M18), it chronicled the famous designer's life from the beginning of his career in 1958, until 1976.

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent was born on August 1st, 1936 in Algeria. Upon the death of Christian Dior in 1957, he became the head designer of the House of Dior at the young age of 21 years old. His spring 1958 haute couture collection saved the fashion house from financial disaster and catapulted him to international stardom with Trapeze Dress but he did not reach the similar success with his later collections. In 1960 he was called to serve the nation and then he received the bad news of his sudden dismissal from the fashion power house. He ventured out to open his own fashion house together with his lover in 1961, which was funded by J. Mack Robinson, an American millionaire.


The movie is directed by Jalil Lespert who is an award-wining actor in France. The script was co-written by him with Jacques Fieschi, Jérémie Guez and Marie-Pierre Huster. It stars Pierre Niney (Yves Saint Laurent), Guillaume Gallienne (Pierre Bergé), Charlotte Le Bon (Victoire Doutreleau), and Nikolai Kinski (Karl Lagerfeld). It is based largely on Saint Laurent's biography written by Laurence Benaïm.

Bergé assisted the film making process by sending models on the runway for a reconstruction of the original 1975 Opéra Ballets Russes collection at the original site which is the current Westin Hotel. His foundation generously loaned 77 vintage outfits and allowed shooting taken place at YSL's headquarters in Paris.

This film is in French with English subtitles. Ticket holders are cordially invited to the Opening Reception of the exhibition "Yves Saint Laurent, Birth of a Legend".

There will be one night only screening on 27 April 2016 at 8.30pm.

The exhibition Yves Saint Laurent, Birth of a Legend features 49 photographs showcasing the designer's creative work, apprehension and satisfaction during the preparation of his first collection in 1962. Pierre Boulat, a photographer assigned by Life magazine, went on to cover his debut together with a journalist.
