Yuriya Japanese Restaurant

Craving some good ol' fashioned Gyoza Ramen in this cold Melbourne weather? Well, then I best advise you NOT to take a trip to Chinatown where it should be just Chinese and only Chinese food. How can you possibly compete being a token Japanese eat out in a Chinese dominated strip? Anyway, back to the chow of the week ...
So, the story starts. My mates and I were out for some hearty Japanese munchies before our big night out. As we trotted along Chinatown, we stumbled across Yuriya Japanese and Teppanyaki.
First impression, quaint. Second impression, poor service. Third time lucky? I'm afraid not. Not only were we getting disposable, snap off chopsticks, our entrees did not arrive as fast as entrees should. First we had Tempura Vegetables. It was just okay. I can't say it was brilliantly crispy. However, they were rather quick to sog, unfortunately. Then came our Gyozas which, I must admit were quite nice. The texture of the pastry was slightly crisp and the filling wasn't too bad, either. It wasn't the most flavoursome and was lacking some 'zing' to it. The menu pictures were deceiving, too, so be aware. I got five pieces as opposed to the seven or eight in the photo. But, I must admit it was enough.
Then came a decade later afterwards, came the mains. Finally. We ordered the in-store special of Dumpling Ramen for $11.50. Bad mistake. Nothing worse than to start a night's out feast with an MSG loaded soup base with frozen, processed meat dumplings and thin egg noodles. Yay? How was this Japanese Ramen? It looked like a kid's recipe book version of Chinese Wanton Soup with absolutely no greens in it! And again, the picture was definitely false advertising. No seaweed pieces as per image - absolutely zilcho! My mate had a Yakisoba (soft fried noodles with beef and vegetables). Well, well, it also came mid way through forcefully chowing down our Ramen. It was just like a Chinese Hokkien noodle stir fry. Oh dear, indeed.
Ah well. At least one thing was right. Our drinks. Southern Comfort on rocks and a glass of chilled plum wine which, alleviated my tongue's taste buds from disappointment. I must say, I have a habit of just blind buying. But, what else can a Melby newbie do? Nothing is better than exploring new dimensions and regretting it afterwards. That is the fun of oblivion. Chinese-Japanese? Well, it was an experience and I shall leave it at that.
