Set amongst the cool of established trees with outdoor seating and a limited number of indoor air-conditioned booth seats, Yumantra is located in a converted train carriage at Sir William MacGregor Forecourt near building 64 on the St Lucia campus.
Yumantra describe themselves as a modern Australian plant-based vegan cafe taking inspiration from the flavours and spices of the world. The menu is 100% vegan but is a great option for meat-eaters too. The burgers are big and juicy with a "meat chewing" experience provided by the mushroom meat, vegan beef or chicken options. There is even vegan soft serve for the sweet tooths.
I was meeting my daughters for lunch, which was my main reason for being there, of course. I have to say this as they read my articles! It was discouragingly busy with a line at the counter however our orders were placed and food for four people was delivered in just under ten minutes. Very impressive and appreciated by the exam-harried crowd of students.
We ordered a vegan chicken burger, popcorn style cauliflower wraps, chips, iced chai and a very berry soft serve. I was stuffed. The servings are a great size, they come in environmentally-friendly takeaway bowls or wraps and most importantly the flavour was great. I will definitely be making a return trip to this train carriage.
Added bonus, Yumantra at UQ is their second cafe outlet. The original Yumantra Vegan Cafe offers the same delicious vegan eats at shop 3/575 Logan Rd in Greenslopes. So you definitely don't have to be a uni student to enjoy their vegan menu. See you there.
