Located along Hindley Street, Yuku Do is a cafe that specialises in Japanese food, with a focus on sandwiches known as Sandos. It is popular with the locals, there is a crowd of a decent size when we visited.

Their Tonkatsu Sando had a pork cutlet of a generous size. The crisp and golden-brown crumb coating set off the succulent flesh nicely. Freshness and crispiness were provided by coleslaw, and tonkatsu sauce partnered nicely with the pork. We liked that the bread was lightly toasted while still remaining soft.

When choosing to order the Kani Salad Sando, be aware that the filling features shredded crab sticks rather than actual crab meat. The filling retained its texture and did not taste fishy. The sauce used for the filling had a slight creamy flavour and ensured it was not dry. Herbs mixed in the filling added extra flavour. The bread was just as good as that used for the Tonkatsu Sando.

Their Onigiri was big enough to serve as a satisfying meal for one. The rice was not heavy and furikake (Japanese seasoning) mixed throughout made the Onigiri flavoursome. For the filling we chose tuna, which had a nice firm texture. Extra tuna filling topped the Onigiri. Finishing the dish was a wrapping of nori seaweed.

The portion size of the Shoestring Chips was generous and can easily be shared. The chips were crisp and fluffy, and seasoned with the right amount of salt. Furikake mixed with the salt made the chips moreish. Japanese mayonnaise was offered on the side as a dipping sauce.

The décor gave the café a cosy feel and diners have the choice between indoor and outdoor seating. Products that bear the café’s logo are available for purchase in the café.
