Youth Week in the City is an event that is the largest government-supported celebration of young people. This year's theme is "Imagine. Create. Inspire." The week runs from the 13th to the 22nd of April as a part of the National Youth Week 2012 celebrations. National Youth Week (NYW) attracts and involves thousands of young people to create a uniquely diverse range of events and opportunities.

involves four large events. On Friday the 13th of April, there's the massive under 18's dance party. Sunday the 15th features a grand show case of short films. Tuesday the 17th has the Betty Makin Youth Awards and Sunday the 19th is the sports day.



"Centre Stage" Under 18s Dance Party (Friday, 13th of April)

Kicking off at 7pm and ending at 11pm, this huge dance party is located at the Opera House. Youth aged 12 to 17 are welcome to join for a price of $10. This is a strictly drug and alcohol free event with dance battles, musical performers, live art and of course DJs. To order tickets and keep an eye on the lineup, go to the Facebook page .



'Imagine. Create. Inspire.' Short Film Show Case (Sunday, 15th of April)

Starting at 4pm and ending at 7pm, the short film showcase is located at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA). In order to get in on this, you must RSVP . If you'd like to enter a film, you need to complete this entry form . This event is free.



Betty Makin Youth Awards (Tuesday 17th April)

Head to Redfern Town Hall for the free Betty Makin Youth Awards event, on from 6pm until 9pm. In celebration of Betty Makin, this event honours and acknowledges the achievements of our youth, youth workers and policemen. There will be refreshments available and awards given out.

Scholarships of $500 will be provided, chosen by a panel out of nominees. Categories for nominations are community contribution, environmental sustainability initiative, the arts (creativity and culture included), as well as young entrepreneurship. Other awards include the Youth Worker Award and the NSW Police Force Award. There are forms to nominate people for this event - the Youth Worker Nomination Form , the Policeworker Nomination Form and the Young People Nomination Form .



Sports Day (Thursday 19th April)

If you play Basketball and Soccer, this is your lucky day. From 12pm until 5pm, the Youth Week in the City Sports day also offers a free lunch. You must register for this event. When you compete in the sporting competitions on this day, you'll be playing against local police, youth workers and other young people. This event is free and is at the King George V Recreation Centre at the Rocks. Remember to register before the 7th of April, as registrations close by then.



As you can see, there are plenty of events for . Remember to register for those that you need to. Our youth are the foundation of tomorrow's world, so it's important to support them.
