Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village, books for Midsomer Murders fans, funny book, books about murder, new books 2021

Thinking of taking a trip to see the sights of a quaint English village? This book might make you think again!

Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village is a tongue in cheek guide to survival in the sort of place that features in a million English murder mysteries. It is written by Maureen Johnson, and the text is interspersed with illustrations by Jay Cooper that are reminiscent of the work of Edward Gorey.

It warns of specific locations to avoid, such as the pond ("the ducks didn't get that fat on bread"), the village hall (a factory for manufacturing grudges") and anywhere with a vat. It also warns of people to be wary of, such as the publican (they have a vat!) and the visiting mystery novelist (death cooties), as well as scary events such as the village fete and historical reenactments.

The writing shows a dark sense of humour and a love of English crime stories from Agatha Christie to Midsomer Murders.
