Each year, some of Perth's brightest young chefs take centre stage as part of Good Food Month to show off the city's culinary future.

The lunch, which is always a sell-out favourite of Good Food Month patrons, is on again this year. It will be hosted by the Shadow Wine Bar at the Alex Hotel from 12.30pm on Sunday, April 18 April with tickets selling for $140. The three-course meal includes wine and beer.

This year's talented line-up of young chefs includes Henry Huang from Hearth Restaurant, James Cole Bowen from Le Rebelle, and Callum Snares from Shadow Wine Bar. The afternoon will be hosted by food, drink, travel journalist and photographer Max Veenhuyzen, who will ease guests through a long Sunday lunch.

Shadow Wine Bar, with its industrial-chic setting, lofty interior, with long drapes and banquet seating, will be the setting for the lunch. The wine bar offers what it calls a modern return to classic European drinking and dining in Northbridge and is next door to the Alex Hotel.

Its style is inspired by the food traditions of European migrants bringing to Perth the classic style of traditional European restaurants. Young Chef, Callum Snares, will be representing Shadow, joining their team in December 2020 as a Chef de partie.

His chef journey started as a barista working at the Packing Shed in Bickley, before taking up an apprenticeship at Gordon Street Garage and then on to Shadow, where the appeal in modern Australian and European cuisine complements the menu.

Representing Elizabeth Quay restaurant Hearth, which specialises in local WA produce from the Kimberley to the Great Southern, paired with an exclusive wine list, will be Henry Huang.

Henry is an immigrant to Perth from Taiwan, who arrived with his family when he was 14. While still at high school, he decided he wanted to work as a chef and worked in cafés, hotels and restaurants including Clarke's of North Beach.

He started work as a Commis Chef at Hearth Restaurant in October 2019 as part of the pre-opening team and was quickly promoted to Demi Chef de Partie and is now a Chef de Partie overseeing the pass and dinner service for the entire restaurant.

With six years of experience behind him, Henry says he is enjoying experimenting with flavours, and creating perfect dishes that connect people and cultures from around the world.

Hearth, Executive Chef Jed Gerrard and his team have created a menu encompassing the skill of cooking the produce from WA farmers, fishers and artisans, over an open fire.

Representing Le Rebelle, with its old world, New York meets Paris kind of feel is James Cole Bowen.

James started his career at Restaurant Amusé in East Perth in 2014 before moving on to Ku Dining in East Perth in 2017, working with Le Rebelle co-owner Liam Atkinson and Head Chef Adam Sayles. In 2018, he moved to Victoria to work at Lûmé in South Melbourne alongside chef Shaun Quade and then with Chef John Rivera in 2019.

James was a National Finalist in the Appetite For Excellence Program in 2019 and was a part of the opening team for Omnia Bistro in Melbourne's South Yarra in 2020. He moved back to Perth in 2020.

Le Rebelle is a three-tiered restaurant with a bistro, wine bar and intimate dining areas which provides familiar European-style food with an emphasis on quality.

The Young Chefs Lunch is one of four culinary feature events taking place as part of Good Food Month this year with a host of special one-off food events under the Friends of Good Food Month banner.

Venessa Cowell, Head of Nine Food Events, which organises Good Food Month said it was important for West Australians to show their support for the restaurant industry after what had been a tough year. She urged people to show their support for their favourite venues, not just throughout April, but at every opportunity.

Guests paying with a Citi card receive 20 per cent off the ticket price bought online until 9am, Thursday, April 1 or unless the Citi allocation is sold out.
