Celebrating the power of queer culture, Casus Circus's performance piece You & I opened to a full house and I have never felt more honoured to be a part of such an outstanding and intimate piece of circus.

Two beautiful and incredibly skilled men - Jesse Scott and Lachlan McAulay - represent their relationship in the form of exceptional acrobatics, aerials, and balancing acts and offer symbolism around love and its accompaniment of a solid foundation of trust. There is no narrative in this performance, but it's not necessary, because the agility, flexibility, and dexterity displayed by Scott and McAuley will leave you speechless, as they jump through a cycle of emotions with a complementary mix of lighting, sound effects, and props (from chairs to hoops to trapeze) to further dramatize the message of their performance.

Mirroring strong themes of what it's like to be in a same-sex relationship, the love between the two individuals is indescribably exhilarating and offers us in the audience a snippet of what it's like to have a supportive partner who recognizes the importance of self-acceptance and self-identity, which works brilliantly when there's a genuine, fluid, and organic state of love and respect for each other. By creating a show that invokes strong emotions and allows oneself to be sensitive and vulnerable in a loving relationship, they also break down the stereotypes around men needing to be 'macho' or unresponsive to their emotional side. In fact, there is a particular part in the show, where both men try on a range of different costumes to reflect how men in gay relationships are perceived to dress or behave or simply be. With a bit of bondage, flamboyance, and gender-bending, Scott and McAuley balance out a stark reality with an idealistic fantasy to represent how they're so much more than that image and playfully yet poignantly let these layers unfold.

With a fantastic instrumental soundtrack to further accentuate the mood and movement in their cosy, warm and homey space that has been set up on stage, the love between the two men is introduced with a sensual, well-choreographed dance that transparently resonates an aura of undying love for each other. While the two harmoniously synchronize in performing jaw-dropping acts of acrobatics and aerials over chairs that have been precariously laid out or using furniture that has been scattered across the stage, there are solo performances that bring new (and a more real and raw) meaning towards masculinity and how it has evolved so beautifully over time.

The standing ovation at the end of their show moved everyone in the room to a teary delight, as Scott and McAulay embraced in a celebratory kiss, leaving us all feeling fuzzy and warm with the spectacular nature of the show, which was packed with a great deal of substance and tenacity to open people's minds and eyes to the beauty of same-sex relationships.

You & I will be performing at Gluttony till March 17, as part of the Adelaide Fringe. Book your tix here .
