The York Mill was built in 1892 with hand made bricks and played a very important part in the development of York, Western Australia. Many farmers moved to the York area as a result of the Mill and the flour produced by The York Mill won awards as early as its first year of production, winning awards as far afield as London and Paris. The York mill went through several ownerships over the years until it eventually fell into disuse in 1967.

The York Mill was sold at auction and restored to house a gallery of fine furniture. New owners Charles Morgan and Caroline de Mori are passionate about the existing York Mill range of goods and services available for locals and travellers alike. The Mill offers a licensed restaurant, weekend markets and Western Australia's premier regional art gallery for original Australian Art , Fine Furniture and gift-ware.

The site is prominently placed at the entrance to the historic township of York , a short 97 km drive from Perth, making it an excellent destination for a day trip from Perth.

Acclaimed award-winning artist Shane Moad is currently exhibiting his latest works at the – one of only two places he will show off his art.

Running until March 30, the free exhibition From The Outback To The Sea is a rare opportunity to see many of his remarkable pieces on display at the same time.

Moving to WA in 1979 and now living in Beverly, Moad discovered his hitherto unknown talent for painting in 1994, four years after a major motorbike accident.

Despite no formal instruction, his art work is in private and corporate collections throughout Australia, America, England and Asia because of its unique approach.

Moad uses strong colour content in his paintings with a semi-abstract view of the landscape, his main subject matter, giving it a sensual feeling and almost human form.

"When I was approached by York Mill Managing Director John Langton to hold an exhibition of my latest works there, I was happy to accept," Moad said.

"I was impressed with the total re-painting and modelling of the gallery space and I'm looking forward to being the first artist to have their work viewed in this new environment.

"I've had a long association with this gallery space and am delighted to see John is working towards having the Boiler Room Gallery used as an exhibition gallery to form the main focal point.

"This will turn out to be a wonderful space for artists to show their works."

Over the years, Moad has twice won the landscape category in the Cossack Art Awards – Australia's largest regional art accolades – and has been given awards by Robert Juniper, Art Gallery of WA director Alan R. Dodge and associate curator of contemporary art Robert Cook and Curtin University adjunct professor of art David Walker.

"I hope people will enjoy my latest pieces on show in From The Outback To The Sea exhibition," he said.

York Mill Managing Director John Langton added: "We're thrilled to be exhibiting Shane Moad's works as the first of many artists who will enjoy the new-look gallery space."
