About 8kms out of York, nestled within the groves of York Olive Oil Co. you'll find
York Ice Cream Co. This Avon Valley business is achieving big things in the world of ice cream.

They literally 'scooped' the pool at the Perth Royal Show Dairy Awards in 2015, taking out Champion Ice Cream. All in all they were awarded
champion ice cream/ gold for Jarrah Honey, plus
silver awards for: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Mango, Chocolate Hazelnut, Macadamia, Rum and Raisin, Salted Caramel, Pistachio, Liquorice, Espresso, and not to be left out, Nougat.
On our visit we tried Mango, Vanilla, Salted Caramel and Chocolate Hazelnut [hint: think Nutella], and I guess it goes without saying they were all so good! To give you some idea why, they use tree-ripened Carnarvon mangoes in the mango, real Pontefract cakes in the liquorice, and real bourbon vanilla pods in the vanilla... I think you get the idea. York Ice Cream Co's ice cream is satisfying and creamy. Best of all, it's not too sweet and doesn't leave you with that sickly feeling some ice cream can, probably because this stuff is real!

York Ice Cream Co also have a couple of sorbets and frozen yoghurt on offer. They serve their ice cream in pre-packed 150ml tubs with a spoon. I actually found this kind of refreshing. Sometimes the options of cones, cups and sizes can become a bit bewildering, and that's before you've even got to the flavour dilemma. The other great thing about this is you can literally grab a bounty to take home with you if you have an esky (if not they have those too). This is our plan next time as my co-taster (who doesn't normally have a sweet tooth) has not been able to stop thinking about this ice cream!

It's always nice to be able to come direct to the source and meet the maker. The other great thing about coming here is there's plenty of other things to enjoy too. In addition to the rest of the shop, there's a great outdoor space with shade, some play equipment, kids seating, pizza oven and the pièce de résistance… the 50m flying fox for kids. I hear from a reliable source there may be an even bigger one in the pipeline, thanks to the handiwork of co-owner Arnaud.
York Ice Cream Co is located off Great Southern Highway, down Ashworth Road (sealed then gravel). They are open Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays 10am-5pm.
