It is in my honest opinion that Melbourne offers up some of the best burgers joints. You will always be surprised by the ingenuity and wonders of these burger hubs that occupy hot spots in the city but especially those that reside within the suburbs. These burgers are definitely a step (or five) up from your simple fast food joints with organic patties, soft brioche or even savoury pumpkin buns and heaps of flavour piled into one handy meal. Add to this a side of pickles or fries (because why wouldn't you) and frankly, I don't see how you can resist this as a weekend feast.
The launch of the vegan scene and a nod to the gluten-free crowd has opened up a deluge of interesting additions from bean burgers, veggie patties, BBQ mushroom and faux meat like the Impossible burger. To ensure we get a great feed these patties are just as loaded up with lettuce, tomato, special sauces and even tempura-battered jalapenos on a bun that won't make you feel like a Buddha once inhaled.
With so many burgers to daydream about, it has me thinking about the little guys, the small chains that humbly pump out these two hand delectables whenever that burger mood hits you. One burger joint that comes to mind is the Melbourne chain YOMG, short for Yo My Goodness, a chain that first cropped up in the beachside of Melbourne but is making its way around town and thank goodness for that.
YOMG is a one-stop burger shop for those with a desire for a bun that can hold its own, sauces that are on point and highlights the flavour of the burger and with additions that are pretty eye-popping. This aesthetically pleasing establishment with an unmissable colourful fit-out offers its own twist on the humble burger, with each loaded bun looking as delicious as the next one. I have been known to dig into a Miss Fu, a vegetable fritter with vegan cheese that melts over the patties, lettuce, tomato, crispy fried sweet potato with ketchup and tofu mayo all tucked inside a beetroot bun.
If you have a craving for curly fries, something which I never knew I needed, then you should probably head here because they are as crunchy as they are entertaining. The fries here come as loaded as you want them to be, whether you have the need for excessive cheese, habanero sauce or even more of a meat adventure, you will surely find something on the menu that suits your taste. If you can't... then YOMG offers up a special offers menu that changes constantly but continues to surprise even the most seasoned burger seeker. Now, if you are wearing your stretchy pants (well, aren't we all these days) then I highly recommend ordering one of YOMG's shakes which range from a creamy Oreo ripple, salted peanut butter caramel and even a peppermint crisp for those who like it fresh.
Do yourself a favour and get down to these guys for some YOMG winning eats, sinful shakes and of course those hilariously delicious curly fries.
