It is lovely to be given the opportunity to try out something new. Six weeks ago I went to the Yoga Sanctuary for their Beginner's course.

My aim was to:
  • Improve my flexibility
  • Concentrate my mind while strengthening my body
  • Increase my sense of well being and body awareness
  • Enable me to concentrate on the moment
  • Relieve stress and anxiety

  • Every Saturday morning I made a point of talking to the other participants asking the very simple question of why they are attending this course.

One participant said that she felt Jill, our yoga instructor, was one of the few she had met who did not regard yoga simply as exercise. She married the mind with the body and for her that was uppermost in choosing this course. A young girl mentioned she had recently moved to the area and she was delighted to have such a wonderful resource at her finger- tips. Another woman who was battling weight gain and some medical conditions felt that this was what she needed as a counter weight to the daily stresses of family life and returning to the work force. The many courses that the Sanctuary offered meant she could find a class, which fitted her in her busy week. Refreshingly a man participates and I hope that more will come as a result of reading this.

For me this was a return to yoga after a break of several years. Jill takes a lot of care in making sure everyone is comfortable in the class constantly reminding us to make sure we are able to do the exercises safely and well, without damage or pain. She will often give alternative instructions for anyone who might be suffering from back pain or joint pain and she will come round and correct our position or smooth out a neck or simply place some healing hands on temples.

The exercises vary every week. Some are more challenging then others but the secret, which Jill is happy to remind us of, is that we should do only what our body is capable of and to practice some or all of them at home whenever we can. Yoga is very much a way of life rather than a one-hour a week solution but being part of this class gives you all you need to carry on healing and wholesome practices at home.

I come away every Saturday with a sense of well-being and calm.I am also conscious that I have used muscles that have been dormant for a long time and that cannot be a bad thing. The sessions put everyone at ease and promote that feeling of wellness. No one goes away with a scowl on their face. Learning how to combine breath and action is key and this takes time. Jill builds on the skill every week to enable more meditation to go along with the exercises and this is very welcome and confirms her commitment to treating mind and body as one.

So have I met my goals? Has the Yoga Sanctuary met my expectations? I am now happy to continue going as it offers me exactly what I want from a session like this and I think most of you out there would find it deeply satisfying.

This is something that everyone can take up and gain goodness from and Jill is well placed to be able to offer that to us in this beginner's course. I should add though that the Yoga sanctuary has a rich programme of classes offered at various times of the day and evening. It is just a case of finding the one that suits you and the yoga instructors there will be happy to guide you on this.
