This fabulous exhibition has just opened at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane and it is one to go and see.
Yirkalla is an indigenous community in Arnhem country and it is now well known for its art centre. The community started in 1935 as a Mission. Catherine and Ronald Berndt, young anthropologists at the time, went to study the communities in 1947 and were particularly taken with their art work on Bark with natural pigments and brushes made out of human hair. However this was not easily transportable so Ronald sent a request to his father to send up brown paper and crayons.
The Aboriginal groups who had never seen either of these two materials took to them like a duck to water and the exhibition is some of their 365 works that were produced by the clan elders in a remarkably short period of time. The works were described by two of the descendants of the artists and artists themselves, as being so much more than art works, and can be seen as title deeds to country, depicting the culture and stories of that time.
The exhibition is on at GOMA on South Bank and is on until the 13th of July 2014. It is on daily from 10.00am to 5.00pm.
