In good news for the foodies of Canberra, Yiayia's Bakery is bringing a taste of Greece to Gungahlin. Stuffed to the brim with delicious Greek treats, the family-owned business began as a zaharoplastio (patisserie) in Greece. When the family returned to Canberra, it continued as a home business that had a cult following with the local Greek community before it eventually evolved into Yiayia's Bakery.
The bakery sells both sweet and savoury Greek food including bougatsa, galaktoboureko, kataifi, baklava, cakes, traditional biscuits, and loukoumades; and savoury treats and pastries including spanakopita, tiropita, mousaka, gemista and pastitsio. The cabinets have a mouth-watering display of crunchy bread, crisp. golden pastry and rainbow coloured desserts that look almost too pretty to eat.
Another thing well worth trying at Yiayia's is the coffee. You can enjoy traditional Greek coffee and Greek frappes as well as the usual coffee menu. Served velvety smooth and strong, it's the perfect accompaniment to the pastries. Yiayia's has an alfresco dining area or you can opt for takeaway. You can also stock up on ready to bake meals including moussaka, pastitsio and kotopita, great if you want to create a delicious dinner without the hard work.
Yiayia's is located in the Marketplace Gungahlin and is open seven days a week: from 7:30am Monday to Saturday and 8am on Sunday.
