Melbourne is known for being the city that's home to the second largest Greek population outside of Athens. As a result, Melbourne is blessed with a plethora of souvlaki shops, tavernas and Greek sweet shops from Oakleigh to Coburg. Situated in the heart of bustling Brunswick, Yiamas is one such Greek establishment that's been well loved by locals and visitors despite only being opened for about a year.

The word 'yiamas' means 'to our health', a popular toast uttered by Greeks when celebrating a special occasion. Indeed, Yiamas' meat-heavy menu is a cause for much celebration – a mixture of chargrilled meats, seafood and village (horiatiki) style salads dominate while a selection of mezedes (share plates) and scrumptious desserts complete the package. When dining at Yiamas, a typical feast may include classic homemade dips such as tzatziki and taramasalata as well as Yiamas specialties like roasted peppers, feta and chilli. Grazers may also enjoy vine-wrapped dolmades, a Cycladic-inspired seafood platter or Yiamas' spicy chargrilled sausage, made in-house from a secret family recipe.

Naturally, Yiamas charcoal-cooked meats cannot be missed. There's the classic lamb or chicken gyros cooked on a charcoal spit ($24), which comes in a plate with tzatziki, pita, chips and salad – be warned: it's enough to fit two people or one very hungry customer. Then there's the chargrilled meat skewers, lamb cutlets, prawns or fish of the day – the last time I visited, it was a fresh snapper. Vegetarians aren't forgotten either, with chargrilled feta peppers and zucchini fritters making the rounds. If choosing is a task that is all too difficult, a selection of banquet options are available starting at $35 per person.

Yiamas offers a small list of desserts including their signature loukamades (fried Greek doughnuts) topped with crushed walnuts, honey and cinnamon. Local and New Zealand wines are offered by the bottle or glass, with a few varieties from Greece also making the cut. To finish, order a nip of Ploumari ouzo or a traditional Greek coffee. Yiamas!
