Brisbane's inner city of Paddington used to be quite the hub for the old types of charity shops where you could buy a whole outfit for under $10 (remember those days?). Slowly but surely, these bargain basement stores have been replaced by upmarket cafes, boutiques and charity stores that specialise in vintage and retro fashion, raising their prices accordingly. But there's a new kid in town, nestled amongst some of Paddington's most exclusive establishments.
Yesterday's Books & Things moved into the charming old Queenslander at 137 Latrobe Terrace in March 2012. The store is an offshoot of their sister store 'Hey Hey It's Yesterdays Thrift Shop' at Rosalie, which sells every second hand item you can imagine across 11 rooms. Both stores are run in aid of the Developing Foundation which supports families who are caring for people with brain injury and developmental disabilities.
This new Paddington store is primarily a second hand book shop, but there is a small selection of pre-loved clothing, CDs, games and bric a bric with a view to expand in these areas.
The shop itself is light and airy, beautifully decorated and almost has an old school library feel. There is a massive selection available, on just about every topic and genre imaginable. Spread over 3 gorgeous rooms the collection is well sorted into identifiable categories and the prices are so affordable, with great deals on multiple purchases.
Well organised, beautiful space at Yesterday's Books & Things
The store has a strong online presence providing an online catalogue on their website, and a facebook page. Run solely on donations, please consider this worthy charity next time you want to purchase some books or better yet, offload some (donations accepted instore or at the drop off area at the Rosalie store). Opening hours are Monday - Saturday 9.30am - 5.00pm and Sunday 10am - 4.00pm.
