When a power blackout darkens the entire world for a brief moment, warehouse stacker and struggling musician Jack Malik (played by Himesh Patel) is hit by a bus and wakes up in a hospital bed minus two front teeth, looking like, in his words, a reverse rabbit.

Home from hospital and sharing a beer in the English countryside with his friends, including romantic interest Ellie (played by Lily James), Jack gets out his guitar and strikes up the chords to Yesterday. His friends are moved by the beautiful song they assume Jack has written. Thinking they're joking, Jack tells them it's one of the greatest songs ever written to which they reply "Well, it's not Coldplay…".

After some Googling and vacant looks from friends when Jack refers to The Beatles, it becomes apparent that Jack is the only man on earth who remembers the legendary band. What does this mean? It means that The Beatles music catalogue is suddenly all his.

Yesterday follows Jack as he pursues his music "writing" and performance of some the best-loved Beatles songs and, with a little help from his friends, becomes a worldwide sensation, attracting huge audiences and brash music industry agents vying for a contract. Ed Sheeran (as himself) delivers a great performance as the one who gave Jack his big break, mentoring on lyric writing ("Hey Dude"), unsuspecting that Jack's "talent" and fame would ultimately eclipse that of Ed himself.

But will Jack get caught out? Does the gift of a plastic yellow submarine herald the end of his career?

Yesterday is a true British rom-com, just as you'd expect from Richard Curtis (of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill fame), and with Danny Boyle directing, Yesterday delivers a feast of fun and toe-tapping tunes which will have you singing in your seat.

Yesterday is a film that the whole family will enjoy and has the potential to become one of those "sing-a-long" theme films where all the would-be-singers (including the writer) get the opportunity to dress up, indulge in communal karaoke and keep Beatlemania alive.
