We have lived in Annerley for over four years now and in our time here we have uttered the words 'we really should go to that RSL' every single time we have driven or walked past the (YSCC). It looks inviting, has great meal and drink deals always written on the board and we love to support anything which is local to us.

We were at a loose end over the weekend so we decided that fate was working with us as we found a two for one meal deal for the club on our shopper docket that day. We headed down on Saturday evening and on entering the space, you get a feel for how big it is but also how many people enjoy coming to eat, drink and chat with other locals.

I decided to sign up since I wasn't a member of any reciprocal clubs and I thought it would be great to give a little extra cash to the club. Little did I know that it was only going to cost me $5 for three years worth and I even got a little plastic card for use in the club to gain points and win prizes. I could tell this was going to be a good night already.

We grabbed a drink and had to ask again if they had charged us correctly since it seemed pretty cheap. Yeap, it was right, just $10 for a glass of wine and an Asahi beer.

After checking out the gaming section with TAB and pokies, we headed over to the dining area to grab our dinner. Using our voucher, we ordered a Chicken Parmigiana and BBQ Ribs. Even with each of these meals costing around $16 each, this would have been a very reasonably priced meal but with our two for one, it almost felt like we were taking money away from the club.

My meal was awesome. Simply put, it was exactly what I ordered, it was cooked really well and since I ordered the veges instead of chips, I felt like it was a bit more healthy and fresh. My husband's meal was also a winner with smoky sauce over the ribs and his chips were beer battered and crispy on the outside but fluffy on the inside - the ultimate fry.

All in all, I've got to say that, even though I was kind of excited to go to the RSL, it exceeded my expectations. I also felt that the people who were frequenting the club, including ex-servicemen and women, were very polite and conversational and it was just a really lovely experience to chat to other locals.

Did I mention there's a courtesy bus? Not only do they have some of the best deals for food and drinks, they will drive you home at the end of your night, for free! Our driver drove us round the corner to our house along with a busload of other lovely locals who we chatted to about what was happening at the club and around our local area.

I should mention at this point that we are in the 30-35 age-bracket and love good food, great atmosphere and a good deal. We weren't the only people under 40 there, we saw lots of couples and groups of friends who were also making good use of the great prices and services at YSCC.

As we had entered at the beginning, The Ode was recited and one and all stood still in remembrance of the reason the club existed, the men and women who have served our country in war and in service. The reason we love our local RSL is for it's generous meals, great service, cheap drinks and interesting people. It's a beautiful thing to support your local club and make use of all these perks because you know that your money is going straight back to a community of people who have paid a sacrifice for you and our country.
