Enjoying the beautiful weather and sunshine, I walked past
Yellow Bird , and it seemed the perfect place to stop for something to eat on a Saturday afternoon. It's been a while because there are so many eateries the length and breadth of Chapel Street from Dandenong Highway to Toorak Road to explore. Perfect because it seemed every man and his dog was out enjoying the weather, and
Yellow Bird's street front seating was filled with happy people chatting, drinking and eating. All these positive vibes just draw you in like a magnet.
Located at 122 Chapel Street, Windsor (03) 9533 8983,
Yellow Bird is open from Tue-Thu from noon to late; Fri from noon to 1am; Sat 10am-1am; and Sun 10am to late. Breakfast is available all day, and
Happy Hour is from 4-7pm on weekdays. I'm glad this cafe/bar/eatery survived the Big C (Covid), because everything was touch and go along Chapel Street 2019-2020. It's a very popular spot for all ages, especially the 20-40 age group from my observation (close to home, I walk past it almost every day).
I'd love to show you more pics of the variety of food they have, however, unfortunately, all we had was Nachos ($21) to share, and a couple of Bloody Mary's at $18 each; add a dollar more and you can get a 'hot' one. Check their
menu here for all other options. You'll see they have an array of boozy cocktails, mocktails, shots, wines, beers, hot and cold beverages (yep, you can get a good latte here too), and more. Food prices range from $15 (toast and eggs - build your own) to beef burritos($25), the most expensive on the menu. Then there's the $12-$14 for battered cauliflower, heaps of fries, spiced chilli salt fries etc. All day brekky, a bunch of big ol' burgers with fries, swinging salads, between two slices kinda food, take me to Tijuana menu of tacos, nachos, burritos and quesadillas, and there's enough of a variety there perfect for beer food/drinking - snacking, to keep one happy at this cafe/bar.
During Happy Hour (weekdays 4-7pm) you can get $4 tacos, $8 spirits, wines, and pints, and $16 tap jugs. Windsor/Prahran/South Yarra, being my 'local hood' - I've been here long enough (not really, just 8 years living in the hood) to gain insider knowledge and seek out the bargains that exist on Chapel Street. There are locals half-price nights at a few places; eateries where you can get a good meal for just $16; sushi shops that sell all their sushis for $1 each close to closing time (yep, one time 3 of us filled ourselves up for dinner with 5 sushi rolls each at just $15 for 3 to eat out - bargain); and pubs that have different specials on different nights of the week. Keeps eating out affordable along a strip you'd imagine you'd spend a fortune at. There is that too of course. By the way, the nachos were lovely, and so far, my favourite ones down the street. Whenever I have friends come over, if they haven't been to Yellow Bird, I take them down there and order nachos for a share plate, making it the perfect accompaniment to chatting and catching up, for two, without breaking the bank.
