Canberra's reputation seems to be improving with age just like the amazing wines grown and produced in the cool climate Canberra wine region. The vineyards and cellar doors of the Canberra region can be found mainly to the north (Lake George area) and west (Murrumbateman area) of the city.
Yarrh Wines is tucked away on a picturesque hill just outside of Murrumbateman and its a real hidden gem. Although Yarrh is slightly off the beaten track, the quality of the wines, the picturesque straw bale cellar door and views for miles make a visit well worth the extra few minutes of driving.
The wines at Yarrh are made with a focus on sustainability allowing the distinct flavours of Canberra's soil and cool climate to shine through for a taste of the local area. Yarrh's wine list features many of the best know grapes of the Canberra region with riesling, shiraz and sangiovese real standouts. To find your own favourite, Yarrh's cellar door offers tastings Friday to Sunday except for July when the winery has a little winter hibernation.
As well as tastings at the cellar door, you are welcome to pack your own picnic and buy wine by the glass (or bottle!) then settle in on the hill and graze your way through the afternoon. With its stunning location, you can relax and enjoy the beauty of both the vineyard and the stringybark forest which surrounds the farmland.
So back to the comparison between Canberra and cool climate wines - maybe they've been overlooked in the past but both are coming of age and finally starting to get the recognition they deserve. Not sure yet? Head to Yarrh, fill a glass or two and I'm certain the wines will convince you that Canberra's cool climate drops are well and truly worth a try.
