A nursery with the community at heart
Yarra View Nursery and its retail centre The Home of Garden Lovers, on York Road in Mt Evelyn is one of the first places you see off the round-a-about at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges.
It's colourful and cute and if you're into garden accessories this is the place to go with all sorts of garden ornaments from hanging birds to brightly painted ladybirds to water features and good sized pots out the front. There is of course a variety of tube stock on offer and landscaping information but the best thing about Yarra View Nursery is its commitment to community.
Behind the shop is the production shed where I discovered that Yarra View Nursery is a supportive training ground for young people with disabilities giving them skills and experience in retail nursery, propagation, landscaping and the opportunity to make lifelong friendships.
Adults with a disability are also able to take part in horticultural based activities building confidence and interpersonal skills. Taking a tour of the production area I saw batches of very healthy tube stock and flourishing seedlings growing happily in the plastic igloos that are kept at a balmy 23 degrees. I chatted with one of the workers and these young people know what they're doing and put a lot of heart into their work.
Young Seedlings ready for The Home of Garden Lovers shop
All the money raised from The Home of Garden Lovers shop goes back into supporting this enterprise and after purchasing a lovely bird hanging and a couple of good ground cover tube stocks it was a really great way to spend my time.
The Home of Garden Lovers has a good selection on offer
