Three 'gates' to enter and three experiences
It's really two gateways. The gateway to the Yarra Valley and the gateway to farm fresh produce.

sign
The sign says it all.

As you enter the Yarra Valley at Coldstream, it's hard to tell which attracts your attention first, the 1950s Bedford truck or the giant strawberry atop the building.

The Bedford truck acting as a specials board and the big strawberry.

There are many "gates" within the complex. The first one you enter is the farm fresh produce. Fruit and vegetables, fresh beef from their own Angus herd, many different preserves, Yarra Valley pasta in the 'fridge and much more.

Vegetables
A very colourful display of the fresh vegetables available.

Fruit
Fresh fruit as well.

The second "gate" takes you into the roomy and natural light bright café. The menu is limited but all items on it are sourced as local as possible, if not grown or produced on their own farm.

Cafe showing the range of teas available.

While sitting enjoying my two scones, naturally with strawberry jam and cream, complemented with a nice hot cappuccino, I noticed seven different blends of teas available for tea connoisseurs.

My morning tea.

After those enjoyable scones, the third "gate" was entered. The highlight of the visit. Row upon row of strawberries growing in a large hot house, just waiting to be picked.

Strawberry fields
A picker picking.

Perhaps the core business is this 'pick your own strawberries' section, where children delight in seeing things growing and being able to harvest them, themselves – very educational.

As strawberries have growing cycles, if you intend to visit just to pick strawberries it is advised to telephone first to ensure there are enough ripe ones to pick.

Another range of produce available.

Their 'phone number is 9739-0568. Further information can be obtained on their web-site: www.gatewayestate.com.au/

Operating hours are Monday to Friday: 8.30 to 5.30
Saturday: 8.30 to 5.00
Sunday: 9.00 to 5.00

If you are entering the Yarra Valley, stop in for a coffee and a browse. As you leave the Valley, call in to purchase some farm fresh produce for that night's dinner.
