Reap & Relish – Yarra Valley Food & Wine Festival 2012

The Yarra Valley has launched a new Food and Wine Festival called 'Reap and Relish'. From Thursday April 26 to Sunday April 29, visitors to the Yarra Valley will be able to 'reap and relish' the local gastronomical delights with a delectable event program.

Winery tours, produce sampling, cooking classes, brunches, lunches, high teas, farm experiences and even beer brewing classes are all on the menu during the four day festival.

Highlight events include local winery tours and the Sunday Garden Party.

The winery tours will run every day during the Festival, with a 9.30am pick-up from St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne or 10.30am pick-up from Lilydale train station. Visiting four wineries, it includes a gourmet winery lunch, a glass of wine and tea/coffee. $155 from Melbourne or $120 from Lilydale station or local accommodation.

The Garden Party on the closing day promises to end the festival with a delicious celebration. The Healesville Racecourse will be transformed into a giant picnic party celebrating the region's produce. There will be food and wine tastings, cooking demonstrations, live music and entertainment and a chance to meet and mingle with local produce experts.

Entry fee is $25 for adults, which includes a souvenir tasting goblet. Under 18's pay $5. From 10-4pm on April 29th. Buses will operate for the party, with pickups from Lilydale Station, Yarra Glen Hotel and Healesville Information Centre, check the website for bus ticket prices and timetable details.

The rest of the festival program offers some delectable degustation dinners and events at the region's top wineries.

In the historic barn at Stones of the Yarra Valley in Coldstream, the Festival's Grand Opening Degustation Dinner on Thursday April 26 features five top Yarra Valley chefs presenting five courses inspired by the region. $160 per person.

The De Bortoli Autumn Harvest Dinner has a whopping 6 courses with matched wine and a chance to meet the special guest, wine tasting guru James Halliday. Saturday April 28, $190.

To kick off Festival Saturday in style, famed wine house Domaine Chandon is putting on a decadent brunch at their Coldstream winery. On the menu are both sweet and savoury treats sourced locally, with tea, coffee or Chandon bubbles. $45, 10am 28th April.

Best budget picks: Punt Road Wines in Coldstream are hosting a Spit Pig and Cider lunch on Saturday 28th, featuring their Napoleone & Co Cider made from apples and pears grown in their own orchards.

The cider will be served with your choice of a traditional pork roll with apple sauce or a Vietnamese version with coleslaw and condiments. Live music and petanque games on the lawn will make for a relaxed afternoon. $15 for pre-booked tickets or $20 at the door.

For a light lunch, Rochford is offering a Platter and Pinot lunch to showcase their Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Pinot tastings are matched to a local produce platter including house made foie gras and chicken liver pate, arancini, and a selection of local cheeses with fresh bread and local black truffle crackers.

House-made macaroons and famous fudge finish the afternoon. Thursday 26 – Sunday 28 April, 12 – 4pm, $38.50 per person.

Classes: On Friday April 27th, De Bortoli is hosting a ' 100 Miles' cooking demonstration , where you can see their Executive Chef Heath Dumesny work his magic on produce sourced only from the local region. It's followed by lunch with matched De Bortoli Estate wines. $145 per person.

Capitalising on Australia's current obsession with microbrewing, the Hargreaves Hill Brewing company is presenting a ' Hop Addiction' beer brewing masterclass on Thursday 26th April. For $100 per person, participants will learn about the magic ingredient in beer, followed by a 3 course dinner in Yarra Glen.

Sweet Treats: For a sugar fix after all the drinking, chocoholics can indulge in a chocolate-themed High Tea at the Sebel Heritage Yarra Valley (28th & 29th April 1-4pm, $45 for adults which includes a glass of sparkling wine, $22.50 for children).

If that's not enough chocolate, Yarra Valley chocolatiers Kennedy & Wilson are running demonstration and tasting sessions at their shop in Healesville ($25, 27 & 29 April at 11am and 28 April at 11am & 1pm).

Transport: Check the Festival website transport page for options, as bus pickups can be arranged from Melbourne for some of the major dinner events as well as the winery tour and Garden Party as mentioned.
