A trip to the Yarra Valley makes a great weekend getaway for those needing to escape the hustle and bustle of Melbourne. Here are some tips for while you're there:
Where to Stay:
The Balgownie Estate Vineyard in Yarra Glen is absolutely magnificent. The sprawling estate features superb gardens, a swimming pool, gym and breathtaking views. The cellar door has a host of delicious wines to sample and Rae's Restaurant features a fantastic menu.
What to Do:
Aside from exploring the stunning vineyard and gardens, take a trip to the nearby Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery. Heard of death by chocolate? It could be a real possibility here. Sample white, dark and milk chocolate, shop for fondue settings or indulge in one of the decadent creations in the on-site cafe. The waffles were incredible.
Yering Station is another beautiful vineyard to visit. On the third Sunday of the month, there are farmer's markets in the historic barn from 9am to 2pm. Fresh seasonal produce is on offer, with plenty of organic options.
The Yarra Glen Grand Hotel is a fantastic place to enjoy a meal and soak up the atmosphere. The meals are tasty and the servings are massive. Ask one of the friendly staff to share a ghost story or two with you while you enjoy a pint.
