Arty day out in the Yarra Valley
The Yarra Valley's finest artists are preparing for the 2013 Yarra Glen Artshow, which showcases the finest art from local practitioners. There will be 500 framed and unframed prints, paintings and sculptures by 170 artists, who are in the running for one of the $300 prizes for works inspired by, or representing, an aspect of the Yarra Valley.
If you're an artist, you have until Friday 22 February to enter (check the website for more details). The public can just enjoy the final products and vote in the People's Choice Award.
There will also be some arty activity around the town of Yarra Glen on the weekend. You can help artists Gay Chatfield and Stefanie Robinson weave their giant mushroom from willow, which will be an interactive piece - the public will be able to play in it when it's completed. Chat to Margaret Carey, sandstone sculptor, as she works in the ACME Gallery, or Michelle Stewart (jeweller) and Michelle Day (mosaicist) at Yarra Valley Gifts as they do their stuff. It's a great chance for kids to see art in action. Kids can also try to spot the 30 textile inspired flowers placed throughout Yarra Glen in garden beds and other spots.
Yarra Glen has some great cafes (and the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice-Creamery is a 5 minute drive away), and lots of wineries on its doorstep, so this is a great idea for an enjoyable day out.
