The is the idyllic spot to have a picnic. A friend and I made lunch, took a bottle of champagne and walked along the river to a spot she had in mind. We entered via Bridge Road in Richmond but The Yarra Bend is, for all intents and purposes, located in Kew.

The first thing I noticed was that it no longer sounded like Melbourne. Beeping horns, footsteps, the burble of voices and the ticking of the little green 'walk' man all disappeared. They were replaced by bird calls, crickets and the flow of the Yarra River.

We walked past the Abbotsford Convent which is an excellent place to stop if you're in need of good coffee or seeking some respite from the sun. Cows mooed at us, goats bleated and peacocks strutted in front of us during our stroll. I had to keep reminding myself that I was smack-bang in Melbourne.

We continued our wander and came across a lovely shaded spot where we chose to have our picnic. The atmosphere was friendly, dogs came over and checked us (or more likely, our food) out and their owners came over to stop and talk. Being in the Yarra Bend seems to bring out the talkative, friendly side of people.

After we'd eaten we continued our walk and headed over the bridge of the Eastern Freeway. Here we stopped and realised what a beautiful view we had. Melbourne was splayed out in front of us and if we looked below there were hundreds of cars racing along the road. It captured the ebb and flow of Melbourne and I can't tell you how long we spent staring at these cars going in and out of the city. It was one of the most beautiful sights I've come across.
