Step back in time
Hidden in the backstreets of suburbia is one of the last nineteenth century estates remaining in metropolitan Sydney.
Yaralla Estate, also known as Dame Eadith Walker Estate, is located in Concord West NSW. The Italianate mansion was home to the Walker family who played a very significant role in the history of Australia with
Yaralla House becaming the hub of Sydney society in the early decades of the twentieth century, even entertaining The Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) there in 1927.
With grounds that boast a sunken garden, grotto, rose garden and Italianate terrace, photography enthusiasts will not be short of an amazing backdrop for their pictures. Personally I find the ambience of
Yaralla Estate very serene and often drive down the long picturesque driveway to the mansion, around the little winding roads circling the cottages, gardens and stables and imagine what it must have been like in its heyday, feeling as if I am in another time and place. It is no wonder parts of this grand estate have been used in films such as
"The Great Gatsby" and the TV series
"A Place to Call Home".
Yaralla Estate holds an open day only twice a year with the next one scheduled for
Sunday April 24, 2016 from 9.30am to 2pm. Cost is $15 for adults, $10 concession and children are free. The open day includes guided tours of the squash court, dairy stables and the beautiful gardens as well as a photographic display spanning 1879-1970. Why not bring a picnic to enjoy in the picturesque grounds or buy Devonshire Tea in the restored historic dairy.
Please read the
visitor information guide here for further details regarding changes to the tour of the main house/mansion. Please note,
bookings are essential. For further details and to
book your tickets, please visit the
website .
Please note that all proceeds from the open day are used for repairs and restoration work on this historic estate.
