Part of a chain of restaurants specialising in Chinese Hot Pot,
YangGuoFu Malatang has opened a branch at the new Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mawson Lakes. It was very popular, there was a large crowd when we visited.
As with most Chinese hot pot restaurants, diners place the ingredients they want into the bowls provided, then state their desired soup base when it is brought to the counter. Pricing is based on weight, at $39 per kilogram. The bok choy and Chinese cabbage that we picked retained their texture and the cauliflower had a nice bite to them. The enoki mushrooms were not overcooked and the soft chunks of tofu took on the soup’s flavour well. Some of the tofu options were filled with various ingredients to make them more flavoursome.
The finely sliced pieces of chicken and pork that we chose were cooked just right, which were contrasted nicely by the softer slices of luncheon meat. We also picked fish balls, which had a nice chewy texture. Our choice for the soup was Malatang, also known as Classic Herbal Beef Bone Broth. The slightly spicy level of hotness that we chose is hot enough to be enjoyed by most tastes.

While the hot pot is flavoursome enough by itself, diners can create their own dipping sauce from a selection of sauces provided. Some of the sauces available include green pepper oil, soy sauce, vinegar, spring onion and sesame oil. Rice can also be ordered if diners desire something to eat their hot pot with.

In addition to various Asian beverages, the restaurant also offers a special drink known as Coconut Latte. It did not taste too sweet and had the degree of coffee flavour that we liked. We liked that it was served ice-cold. Its sweetness makes it great for helping to soothe the spiciness from their hot pots.

The decor of the restaurant gave it an Asian feel. For seating, diners have the choice between the usual table and chairs or bar-style seating near the windows. Arriving early is advised to ensure you don’t have to wait too long for a table.
