Scholarships on offer for disadvantaged students
Applications are open for YAL Connect scholarships offering young Australians up to $8000 a year to pursue their dreams.

Young Australia League (YAL), founded by J.J. "Boss" Simons in 1905 to support young Australians reach their full potential, has evolved over the years to offer young people facing barriers help with their journeys through education.

Applications for the 2023 round of scholarships are open from July 1 to August 15.

Scholarships are open to anyone in Australia aged between 14 to 25 who face barriers in their educational journeys.

The scholarships aren't restricted to academic pursuits but are also aimed at encouraging promising young people to pursue opportunities in education, from the arts and sports through to traditional schooling and apprenticeships.

Each application is considered on its merits.

Successful recipients can spend their scholarship funds on anything that helps them on their education journey.

The program has supported 50 recipients over the last seven years with $400,000 in funding.

Scholarships and bursaries are for the 2023 academic year.

YAL CEO Tammy-Rae Schaper says the organisation is looking to award scholarships to students who are willing to strive beyond the hardships life has thrown at them to pursue their goals in life.

That disadvantage might be social or economic, geographical isolation, financial, or challenges with disabilities and family difficulties.

As well as providing financial aid, the YAL scholarships are designed to expand opportunities for young people to expand their horizons.

All Australian students are eligible for the scholarships with 2022 recipients coming from Victoria, NSW and Queensland as well as WA.

The scholarships are in two categories, for years 10 to 12 with scholarships of $3,000 a year for up to two years, and post-secondary, for ages 18 to 25 with scholarships of $8,000 a year for up to two years.

The YAL and City of Wanneroo Upper Secondary Scholarship is open to recipients who reside or attend school in the City of Wanneroo in Western Australia.

The YAL and City of Stirling Upper Secondary Scholarship is open to people who reside or attend school in the City of Stirling.

The YAL and Schiavello Systems WA Upper Secondary Scholarship for Indigenous Students is open to students who identify as Indigenous Australians and who reside in WA.

The YAL and Harrison Family Trust Upper Secondary Scholarship is open to recipients who reside in or attend school in the City of Armadale in WA.

The YAL Members Rural or Remote Upper Secondary Scholarship is open to recipients living in rural or remote areas, which encompasses all areas outside Australia's major cities.

The YAL Upper Secondary Scholarship and YAL Post Secondary Scholarship are open to recipients Australia wide.
