Having driven past Yakiniku on Sir Fred Schonell Drive in St Lucia countless times, my husband and I finally decided to stop there for dinner one night. Nobody seemed to talk about this restaurant very much – no Facebook check-ins, no word of mouths and not many reviews online either. We decided to try it anyway.

We walked in to see very basic décor – pretty much just tables and chairs. Oh and a giant fish tank. Although I'm usually not too fussed on the interior design of a restaurant, I expected it to be a little nicer. The menu reminded me of Japanese takeaways in the city as it was quite basic, which meant we were able to make our choices quickly.

We ordered chicken karaage, fish wafu, chicken miso yaki, miso soup and steamed rice. Chicken karaage (also known to some as Japanese KFC) is a must-order for me whenever I go to a Japanese restaurant. I guess you can call me the karaage expert as I probably would've tried karaage in most Japanese eateries . Here, the karaage was a little overcooked as there was a slight burnt taste. The flavours of ginger and garlic were a little too subtle for my liking, but it was still delicious.

Fish wafu was yum. It was served on a hot plate with plenty of ginger soy sauce. We drizzled the sauce on our rice and wolfed it down in no time. The fish was yummy of course. The chicken was grilled and came with vegetables on the side and spicy miso sauce. I wasn't a big fan of the sauce as I expected a prominent miso flavour to come through. However, it tasted very much like some sort of Korean chilli paste.

The miso soup was good. I did like that very much.

All in all, I did like the food. It was takeaway sort of food, but the prices didn't reflect that. Portion sizes were quite generous, but value for money wasn't that great. I expected it to be more of a restaurant, but I guess being around the St Lucia area it was catered towards students. They did offer $19.95 per person hot pot buffet and perhaps that's what we should've gone with as I had heard good things about it.

So I have mixed feelings about this place. The place is too 'bare' to be classified as a restaurant and it looked more like a takeaway joint you'd go to for lunch. However it's only open for dinner. The owner was friendly and the service was good. I think it would be a good place to have hot pot so if you're looking for a place perhaps give Yakiniku a go.
