XRACE is described as a mystery adventure race for families. Think Amazing Race meets fun run with some carnival games thrown in. Teams of two (one child and one adult) race together and complete mystery challenges in a race against the clock and against other teams.
Challenges can be physical, mental or knowledge-based and you must also watch out for some "baddies" along the way. The race takes place over 3 - 4 kilometres and usually takes between 45 - 90 minutes to complete.
The great thing about this race is that it is only as competitive as you want it to be. Even if you don't actually race against the clock, you will still get the benefits such as:
Challenges might include physical activities like a tug of war, piggy back rides or a sack race. There are also memory challenges and testing your knowledge in areas such as kids movies or songs. In addition to the mystery challenges, there are also compulsory challenges which are announced prior to the race and which you can prepare for, it might involve something like learning some set dance moves.
It is important for teammates to stick together during the race and there are "baddies" lurking around the course to make sure you do. Baddies can be identified as they will have a mask partly covering their face. If they catch you separated from your teammate they can give you a time penalty. But there is an easy way to beat the baddies. All you have to do when you see a baddie is hold hands with your teammate and they can't catch or stop you.
Interested? Of course you are, so here's what you need to know:
XRACE is recommended for children between the ages of 6 - 14 years. Younger children are able to compete in the Nippers category - a mini version of the XRACE. For more information about Nippers please click here.
Each XRACE has ten different challenges
Each team must successfully complete one challenge before moving to the next.
XRACE challenges may involve water, mud and physical exertion
Participants are required to be able to walk or jog 3-4 kilometres
You will be provided with a XRACE shirt to be worn during the race. This is to be collected on the day. You will also be provided with a timing tag (or transponder) to attach to your shoe.
At the finish line, each participant will receive a finisher medal. It's a great moment where you and your teammate can share your achievement by placing the medal around each other's neck.
Why not join in the fun with your family and create some fun new memories? I certainly will be.
There will be two Sydney XRACE events this year. XRACE Sydney Olympic Park will be held on Sunday 19th November 2017 at Newington Armoury. The other Sydney event will be held at Sydney Park at St Peters.
