XBody EMS training is a fitness system that has recently been launched in Australia. I was invited along by personal trainers, Amy and Norbert from XBody Australia Pty Ltd , to try it out at their studio in Newstead.

So what exactly is XBody EMS training? Xbody Australia describes itself as new wave cutting edge technology where you can burn up to 500 calories during a single 20 minute training session. EMS stands for Electro Muscular Stimulation. It is a full body training system that uses an impulse current, much the same as the electrical impulses that your body sends to make your muscles move, except on a vastly amplified scale. Muscles are stimulated by the use of conductive electrodes attached above the muscle causing the deep muscle fibres to contract and relax at a fast rate, tailored to suit you by your personal trainer. Hence, much faster results from training and exercise.

Other claimed benefits of XBody EMS training include reduction in cellulite, rapid, easy and safe weight loss, the ability to grow muscles 5 times faster than conventional training and improved muscle tone. Having tried one session, I would be inclined to believe the claims, although I would require a few more to take quantifiable, measurable results.

The session starts by donning a EMS training suit which needs to be worn over natural fabric. In this case, I was given a tight fitting top and shorts and wetted down with warm water to aid conductivity. The suit itself is akin to a bulky harness and vest with small electrodes that are then plugged in to the EMS machine. The personal trainer gently tests each muscle group and finds an electrical impulse level that suits you. It is a strange, but in no way unpleasant sensation, where you can feel your muscles working hard, independent of your own will.

The rest from there is relatively simple. You simply follow the video on the screen by doing simple movements and controlled, low impact exercises. It's nothing too strenuous (seemingly) where even the most uncoordinated person (ie: me) can easily follow along as you squat, raise arms, gently bend and plank. Everything is extremely gentle on your joints, so anyone with joint problems or undergoing recovery, restorative training or back problems such as herniated disks could give this a try too.

Within each 20 minute session, there are 3 different stages - strength training, gentle cardio and ending with a massage (thankfully while lying on the floor). All the while, the suit is causing your muscles to continuously contract and relax. It's like exercising without having to put in all that bothersome energy and exertion that exercising usually takes. And with much, much better results.

And what of the results? After doing only 20 minutes of gentle, low impact movements, can you really see or feel any payoff? YES! The following two days saw me grimace and wince (but in a good, I-have-just-used-my-muscles satisfying kind of way) any time I tried to stand up or sit down. It felt like the best workout I have had in years and even one session saw me with more toned muscles and better skin tone, albeit, sadly temporarily. Apparently, you see most benefit from two sessions a week and of course, like any exercise program, sustained use. But it would be an excellent way to kick start an exercise program and give your fitness and muscle tone a good boost. This could be the perfect way to start off your New Year's exercise resolutions!
