Located a short walk from Coogee Beach, X74 serves as the trendy local neighbourhood bistro. If you are in the area and want a bite to eat, this café by day and restaurant by night is a great place to start.
We arrived at the café at 10am on a Saturday morning after sending our car for a wash around the corner. Staff were friendly and the breakfast menu consisted of popular brunch choices such as buttermilk pancakes, handmade muesli, eggs benedict, etc. I ordered a vegetarian breakfast while my companion ordered an easy (big) breakfast.
The food arrived promptly and we were extremely pleased with the food. My vegetarian breakfast had eggs, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, spinach, hash browns, haloumi and sourdough toast, all cooked to perfection.
My partner also thoroughly enjoyed his big breakfast. My favourite part of his dish was the baked beans. These baked beans came in a little red ceramic pot and the beans have been cooked with ham hocks, which imparts a richer and more umami (savoury) flavour. Utterly to die for.
The breakfast dishes were rather pricy at $19 each, but with the portion sizes and quality I would defnitely return.
Apart from yummy food, X74 also has excellent coffee and is fully licensed, for when it turns into a classy restaurant at night. By the time we were getting the bill, the café was really starting to fill up with customers milling around waiting to get a table. This place is definitely worth a try.
