After a successful first year in 2020, the
Wynnum Fringe Festival is back again this year from 16th to 21st November 2021 with a week-long celebration of arts and culture. As Festival Founder/CEO/Artistic Director, Tom Oliver says "
the festival is not just another event, but a journey where you will see, hear, smell, taste and be totally immersed in the wonders of a unique Arts Festival."
Everyone is well aware of the disastrous effect COVID had on arts and entertainment in Australia, however, we can rejoice in the creative presentations from various artists and the excitement that this event is bringing to our unique Brisbane and Bayside. Some shows are ticketed at very reasonable prices, and some are free.
Kicking off the Festival on Tuesday 16th November is
Alexa, Turn on the Lights, which is being held at
Frenchies Café in Bay Terrace, Wynnum. A
lexa, Turn on the Lights is about technology and the future of us. Part TED talk, Part Couples Therapy is a begrudging duet between performer Jacob Watton and an Amazon Alexa.
Alexa, Turn on the Lights is also ticketed for Wednesday 17th November 2021.
The line-up for this year's ticketed events is incredible. The choice will be "not what I will see", but "how can I see them all?" Read more about the below entertainers

On the website, you can also locate the
schedule and map of the events. With an event of this magnitude, there is always the need for
volunteers to help the organisers, so each entertainment event runs smoothly. I have already signed up for three volunteer sessions, you may like to, as well. Volunteering can be lots of fun and you can meet interesting people. Minimum requirements are that you are available on the day/s you nominate and that you bring with you a positive and proactive attitude with a basic understanding of respect for workplace health and safety.
Roles available include site management assistance, construction/dismantling of fencing ad structures for pre and post festival, box office/ticketing, administration assistance, pre and post COVID cleaning, merchandise sales, bar sales, venue specific hands/runners and art installation construction. When you go through to the
volunteer application page, you can indicate the top three role preferences you would like to do. After that, the organisers will send you an email to verify your attendance or not.
One of the best things about
Wynnum is that you do not have to pay for parking. There are plenty of street parking, all of which you do not have to walk far and if you are arriving by train, the Wynnum Central Train station is very close to the main event area in Edith Street. Edith Street can accommodate 3000 people within the COVID rules. Once this number is reached, organisers will be letting people in as others leave.
Most of the free events will be happening in Edith Street where live music, roving entertainers and food and drinks stalls will be positioned. From 5.30pm on Friday 19th November 2021, the Yulu Burri Ba Dancers will be showcasing their traditional song, dance and stories. This will be a wonderful opportunity for you to connect to nature as you become one with the broader community. Read more on the free events
here.
If this is the only entertainment festival you go to all year, you certainly will not be disappointed. Please book early for any ticketed events, so you do not miss out. See you there!
