The Holi Festival of Colours has grown in popularity among people of all cultures. It's looked upon as a fun time when coloured powder flies through the air as everyone gets dowsed in it.

Young people enjoy it as something fun to do with their friends, even if it's not their culture. The important thing is that it's celebrated with the true intent that traditionally marks the occasion.

Holi is celebrated on the full moon day falling in the month of Phalguna. Phalguna is a month in the Hindu calendar, the 12th month of the year that corresponds with Feb/Mar in the Gregorian calendar.

Traditionally it's a 3 day festival and originally related to a spring festival of fertility and harvest. It also marks some Hindu legends. In a nutshell, Holi relates to Holika, a female demon who was the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashyap.

To keep it condensed, the demon king was inflated with his own importance and thought of himself as a God, expecting everyone to worship him. However his son Prahalad refused and remained a faithful devotee of the God Vishnu. In anger he tried to kill his son in many ways, with no success. This responsibility then fell on his sister Holika who had been given a magic power by the Gods that made her immune to fire.

She seized Prahalad and sat in the middle of a fire with him in her lap. Prahalad kept praying to Vishnu and was spared while Holika was burnt to ashes fo rmisusing her given powers for evil. King Hiranyakashyap was killed by Vishnu and Prahad ruled in his father's place.

To celebrate this story, large bonfires are built and a dummy of Holika is burned on the fire. The moral of the story and celebration being, good always wins over evil. The best part about Holi is that all distinctions of caste, class, age and gender are suspended, making everyone equal, and that indeed is a worthy reason to celebrate.
