Kansas City is known for its barbecue. Heated debates abound about which barbecue joint is the best; but, most agree that the best barbecue restaurants are gauged by their meat, the rub, and the sauce. A sweet or spicy sauce is a frequent debate.
No matter their preference, most Kansas Citians have a favorite—frequently a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant that's been around for years. Such is the case with Wyandot BBQ. Started originally in Wyandotte County at 8441 State Ave., they've been serving debatably some of the best BBQ in Kansas City since 1977.

Even with two locations, there's nothing fancy at either: sparse décor, plain dinette tables, self-serve soda fountain, and lots of paper towels to wipe the sauce off your fingers. At Wyandot BBQ, the focus isn't on the décor, it's on the food, and lots of it for a very affordable price.

My favorite is their mixed plate because of the variety of meats. It is piled high with ribs, brisket, ham, and French fries. It's easily enough for three meals at $11 for the plate. The sauce is warm and spicy, the meat is falling apart tender, and the prices are fantastic. But only go if you're really hungry.
