It doesn't need to be Oktoberfest or Christmas for Germans to celebrate. It's February and they're getting ready at Munich Brauhaus in The Rocks and The Bavarian in Manly for an epic celebration of sausages and bier, with plenty of shenanigans to boot.
It's the first Wurstfest ever and may even be considered the German version of Chinese New Year, celebrating the Year of the Dog, if there was such a thing. Kicking off at noon is 'the biting of the sausage', which marks the opening of this day in snag history.
Following this, the barbie hotplate will sizzle with 20 limited edition sausages. Think out of the box with a beef, vegemite & cheese combination; a Thai coconut pork & chicken; a beef chilli chocolate; and a super hot pork Habenero, to name a few. From 2pm, for 3hours, grab a sausage sanga and top it with haus salads and sauces for just $12. Each sausage is matched to a Bavarian bier so you can get a hops hit alongside the different flavours. Bring your mates and book a table to secure a spot.
At 3pm, there's a parade of weiners of a different kind with a sausage dog costume parade bringing the cute factor. The people behind this are on the hunt for the best-dressed weiner dog. The winning weiner will score a trophy and some special dog treats from Real Pet Foods, whilst the owner gets a $250 bar tab. So if you have an adorable dachshund with a passion for fashion, then bring him or her along in an endearing outfit. Even if they're not the winner, each contender will get a free doggy bag. You will need to register to be in with a chance.
Next, it's back to eating snags with a sausage eating contest at 6pm. That's if you're not full already. Test your abilities and see how many snags you can demolish in 5minutes. The winner will receive a $200 bar tab.
At 8pm you can enjoy some live music from the Oompah Band and if you're still moving and not in a sausage and bier coma then hang around for the main stage challenges, including (you guessed it) sausage-inspired dares and tests of your stamina. A swag of prizes are there for the taking.
The big line-up of fun will have you partying late into the night in this momentous celebration and it's just one part of a bigger month of Wurstfest that also includes a smorgasbord of shenanigans.
