Curiouser and curiouser - visit Wunderkammer
If you are looking for a unique and special shopping experience in the heart of Melbourne, look no further than Melbourne's very own chamber of wonders, Wunderkammer, located at 439 Lonsdale Street.
Our own Chamber of Wonders at 439 Lonsdale Street in the Melbourne CBD.
A chamber of wonders was traditionally an eclectic collection or a number of cabinets of curiousities displaying an array of interesting objects, akin to what we would think of as personal or private mini-museums, with some of the earliest examples dating to the Renaissance.
In this same vein, Wunderkammer is a retail store featuring unusual, odd, and downright interesting gifts and collectibles. You'll immediately notice, when you first go looking for this place, is the other worldly charm from the moment you have to step down off the main street to get into the store.
Lots of interesting things to look at from the moment you step in.
Inside you will find glass and wooden cabinets with items of natural history, geological samples, scientific and medical equipment, taxidermic displays and collections, antique globes and maps, works of art, books, and other miscellaneous items. Needless to say, you are likely to lose your sense of time as you wander through the store.
Several cabinets of curiousities to make your selection or simply to window shop.
The staff are very friendly and let you take the time to make your selection, answer any questions you might have, or simply satisfy your curiousity or need for a Diagon Alley type of store in the midst of a Muggle city.
Have an afternoon to while away? Wunderkammer is the perfect store to do just that, provide you with some inspiration, or give you ideas about what to get that hard to buy for person in your life.
